DESCRIPTION The neuroradiology fellowship program offers the trainee experience in neurological aspects of computed tomography (including CT angiography, MR s canning, angiography and myelography, as well as extensive exposure to head and neck radiology. Other rotations include pediatric neuroradiology and clinical and neuropathology services. Interventional neuroradiology exposure is optional. The neuroradiology fellow has the opportunity to perform over 400 diagnostic angiograms annually on a dedicated biplane digital Siemens NeuroStar unit. The vascular neurointerventional service performs 200 cases each year, including arterial and venous thrombolysis, angioplasties, carotid stents, tumor embolizations, aneurysm coilings, AVM embolizations, petrosal vein samplings, and balloon test occlusions. The expanding neuroradiology interventional spine service performs vertebroplasty, pain relief procedures (nerve root blocks/facet block blocks/epidural steroid injections), discography, and vertebral body biopsies, affording the fellow extensive opportunity to acquire "in demand" skills. Fellows gain exposure to pediatric neuroradiology at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh under the direction of Charles Fitz, M.D. The ACGME-accredited neuroradiology fellowship is one or two years in length, two being preferred. The program accommodates one fellow. Completion of the neuroradiology fellowship program fulfills the requirements for senior membership in the American Society of Neuroradiology, while completion of the first year of the fellowship fulfills the proposed requirement to sit for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Neuroradiology examination of the American Board of Radiology.
ACADEMICS Neuroradiology fellows are required to participate in research. Neuroradiology research is primarily clinical, but laboratory projects are in progress in the The Center for Neurosciences Research and the Center for Genomic Sciences. It is expected that the fellow will author or present at least one paper during his or her tenure. The fellow is also expected to give a monthly conference to the radiology residents and to participate in all interdepartmental conferences.
PREREQUISITES Applicants to fellowship programs in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology must be participating in or fairly recent graduates of an accredited training program and must be certified or qualified for certification by the American Board of Radiology at the time of starting the fellowship. Candidates must be able to obtain a graduate medical training license in the state of Pennsylvania. International medical graduates must have ECFMG certification and hold either permanent resident status or a J-1 visa.
