DESCRIPTION The Department of Diagnostic Radiology of Allegheny General Hospital (Drexel University College of Medicine, Allegheny Campus) offers a one-year fellowship in musculoskeletal, emergency, and trauma imaging. The fellowship will consist of rotations through the musculoskeletal section in the main radiology department as well as through the remote reading areas in the emergency department and trauma intensive care units. In addition to musculoskeletal imaging, interactions within the Department of Diagnostic Radiology will include body imaging, neuroimaging, and angiography. Outside of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, there will be extensive contact with trauma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, emergency medicine physicians, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. In addition to exposure to all noninvasive applications of diagnostic imaging, the fellow will have ample opportunity to perform arthrograms and bone biopsies. The fellow will at all times be under the supervision of one of the staff radiologists subspecialized in musculoskeletal, emergency, trauma, neuroradiologic, and pediatric imaging. The fellow is expected to participate in four areas: 1. film interpretation; Film interpretation duties will be to assist the staff radiologists in the main reading room and in the emergency department. In this capacity, the fellow may be asked to supervise residents who have been on call. All CT, polydirectional tomographic, and MR procedures will be supervised by the fellow. The fellow will also have the opportunity to perform arthrograms and bone biopsies and to supervise residents performing these procedures as well. Finally, the fellow is expected to participate as a consultant with the referring physicians. These will include attending the trauma resuscitations in the emergency department and guiding the surgeons toward obtaining the proper and expeditious imaging of their patients. Other consultative duties will be within the Department of Diagnostic Radiology where interactions are most likely to be with members of the Divisions of General Surgery (Trauma), Medical and Radiation Oncology, and the Departments of Orthopedics and Neurosurgery. Prior to interpretation sessions with the attending staff radiologist, the fellow should organize the cases and be able to present his/her personal conclusions on each case. The obligation to dictate formal reports will gradually be assumed by the fellow as he or she gains sufficient experience. Invasive procedures must be reviewed with the senior staff person before performance.
Prior to completion of the year of training, the fellow is expected to present a well-organized lecture on some topic of relevance in musculoskeletal-emergency-trauma radiology to the members of the department. The fellow is also expected to give a monthly conference to the radiology residents and to participate in all interdepartmental conferences. In collaboration with the senior faculty, the fellow should initiate appropriate clinical research projects leading to presentations at national conferences, publications, or scientific exhibits. PREREQUISITES Applicants to fellowship programs in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology must be participating in or fairly recent graduates of an accredited training program and must be certified or qualified for certification by the American Board of Radiology at the time of starting the fellowship. Candidates must be able to obtain an unrestricted license in the state of Pennsylvania. International medical graduates must have ECFMG certification and hold either permanent resident status or a J-1 visa.
